Solid & Engineered Hardwood

There are basically two types of hardwood flooring – Engineered Wood and Solid Wood.

Solid Wood

This is the most common and available in three basic types: strip flooring, wider width plank flooring and parquet flooring. This type of wood is milled from a solid piece of hardwood. Because of the thickness, it can be sanded and refinished over several generations. Solid wood expands and contracts with changes in your home or office’s relative humidity. Typically this wood flooring would be found above grade.

Engineered Wood

This type of flooring is constructed with three to five or more layers of wood laminated together. Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration and bonded together with heat and pressure. The bottom layer can be made of wood composite which creates more stability in the product. The top layer is a veneer which can consist of many wood types such as ash, birch, maple, cherry and more. As a result of the engineered process, this wood is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed in all levels of the project.
